Toba City is where Kokichi Mikimoto, the founder of Japan's leading jewelry brand "Mikimoto", successfully cultivated the world's first semicircular pearls. In April 2024, "Umirabo" opened in a location facing Ago Bay in nearby Shima City, making effective use of the site of a closed pearl farm.
